ADHD and business success: what is it costing you?

ADHD and business success: visible achievement contrasts with hidden overwhelm and exhaustion, while a tangled line opens into a clear path.

ADHD and business success: what is it costing you?

You’ve built a business or reached a senior role. People trust your judgement. Yet you’re frightened that one day they’ll discover how hard you find it to keep everything together. This can be the hidden cost of ADHD and business success: feeling like an impostor, even with years of achievement behind you.

It’s 10pm. You’re still wrestling with an email someone else would have sent before lunch. Your partner has gone to bed. You’re thinking about the invoice you forgot, the task you’ve put off and what you’ll say if someone asks about it tomorrow.

If you’ve recently been diagnosed with ADHD, or suspect you have it, that gap between how capable you appear and how much you struggle may feel painfully familiar. Things other people seem to find simple take you hours. You worry that if colleagues or clients saw the effort and last-minute scrambles behind your work, they’d question whether you belong in the role.

So you check again, work later and keep the difficulties to yourself. Even when things go well, the relief may be short-lived. There’s always something else to prove. Keeping it all going takes energy you wanted to give to the rest of your life. You’re beginning to ask whether your success is costing you too much.

The passion you once felt for your business or career may have faded, and each day feels more of a struggle. You may be wondering whether the work you’ve built your life around still reflects your beliefs, your values and what matters to you now.

Is ADHD affecting your life outside work?

You’ve spent the day masking, working hard to hide the things you struggle with. By dinner, “What would you like to eat?” feels like one decision too many. Decision fatigue has followed you home, and you’re wondering how long you can keep this up before burnout catches up with you.

If your spouse works in the business too, “Can we just talk about tomorrow?” can turn dinner into another meeting. You’re sitting opposite each other, discussing a client, while the conversation you wanted to have as a couple waits again.

A friend’s message is still unanswered. You meant to reply on Tuesday. It’s now Sunday.

What changes after an adult ADHD diagnosis?

A diagnosis can bring relief and questions about the past. Learning about my difficulties initially knocked my confidence before I began recognising my strengths again.

The NHS guidance on adult ADHD explains that your specialist will discuss “what this means and what will happen next”. You may also want support to reconsider how work and personal life fit together.

How can ADHD coaching help business owners and executives?

ADHD coaching can help you set goals, understand patterns and develop practical approaches to everyday life. For business owners and executives, this may involve productivity, overwhelm and sustainable working habits.

That might mean boundaries between business and couple time, sharing responsibilities or managing availability, leaving energy for your partner and children.

An experienced, properly trained ADHD coach can help you define goals that move you towards the person you yearn to be, at work and in your personal life.

Together, you can explore and change patterns that have been costing you too much, recognise strengths and use them in new ways. This can include techniques that work with your brain, ways to recognise overwhelm and return to calm, and getting things done without continually relying on pressure. Alongside practical steps, coaching can help you reframe how you think about yourself and your challenges.

If something does not work, you can examine why and adapt it together, developing ways of working and living you can sustain.

Is ADHD coaching therapy?

ADHD coaching isn’t therapy. It focuses on your goals and everyday life, and can work alongside therapy or medical treatment where appropriate. If therapy has not helped with the changes you want to make, you could explore whether coaching suits your needs.

How do you choose a qualified ADHD coach?

Look for professional coaching training, ADHD-specific training and assessed coaching skills. Ask about supervised practice, ethics, professional boundaries and relevant experience.

Credentials from the International Coaching Federation (ICF) or the Professional Association for ADHD Coaches (PAAC) can help you check a coach’s preparation. Ask which credential they hold and how to verify it. With a general coaching credential, ask separately about ADHD-specific training. Credentials cannot guarantee an outcome.

I offer ADHD coaching myself, so I have a commercial interest here. I also feel strongly that finding suitable help should be easier. You deserve clear information about training, assessed competence and professional safeguards.

What should you ask an ADHD coach before committing?

Choose two or three questions to have beside you during an introductory call:

🎓 What coaching qualifications and ADHD-specific training have you completed? Ask what unfamiliar initials mean.

🧭 How would we decide what to work on? Particularly useful when everything feels connected.

💬 How might you approach work taking over our relationship? Listen for curiosity about your circumstances.

🔄 What happens if I struggle to follow through? Ask how they respond and adapt.

📈 How would we review progress? Ask how you would assess changes that matter to you.

📋 What would I be agreeing to? Clarify fees, frequency, any minimum commitment, cancellation terms and support between sessions.

Notice whether you feel heard and comfortable asking questions. You can take time to decide or speak to another coach.

What happens on an ADHD coaching discovery call?

A discovery call is an introductory conversation about your needs, the coach’s approach and whether you might work well together. Ask about fees and commitments, including whether the call is free.

You do not need to arrive with a clear goal. Start with something you would like to feel different.

What would you like more room for? Laughing with your partner. Having the energy to enjoy seeing a friend. Listening when your child tells you about their day. Finishing work and feeling the evening belongs to you.

Note what matters to you and take your questions along. You can start before you have everything worked out.
